Tuff Sheds
Tuff Shed projects designed as temporary transitional shelters to help stabilize the homeless and assist in the finding of permanent housing. The City of Oakland and private donors/volunteers have set up Tuff Shed Temporary Shelter Units at 5 locations --
Northgate, Lake Merritt, Miller Ave, Mandela, Oak St.
20 Sheds per site (Mandela 40), two occupants per structure. Breakfast and dinner are donated; portable showers on site twice a week. The sites are gated with secured entry/exit, shared porta-potties, but no running water.
NOTE: HAWG's position has always been that because of relative cost, inefficiency, inadequate policies (no occupant involvement), forcing 2 unknown people in a small crowded space, the susceptibility of the city to overstate its "success" stats, CALM has publicly declared that the Tuff Sheds program would be the least of its choices for anti-homelessness.
